Biology and Behavior
Bumble Bees are densely covered with yellow and black bands of hairs. They have long mouth parts that allow them to gather nectar from flowers that have their nectar buried deep within the petals. They are social nesters, although their society is not as highly ordered as that of honeybees. As social insects, bumble bees live in colonies. Each spring a queen that has survived over wintering will find a suitable nesting site and establish her colony. Her first brood of eggs mature into workers that forage on pollen and nectar for food. The workers do produce honey, but it is not edible to humans. Bumble bees are important pollinators of many plants. Both queens and workers collect pollen and transport it back to the colony in pollen baskets on their hind legs. Workers are small if born early in the year, and large if born later in the year. The bumble-bee nest consists of a spherical chamber with a single exit. The queen chooses a preexisting cavity, such as an abandoned mouse nest, in which to begin her family. Most species nest in the ground. The bumble bees colony grows larger over the summer and is usually discovered while gardening or mowing the lawn. The bumble bees will attack to defend their nest, so they are considered a health concern. Female Bumblebees can sting (Queen and workers) and their sting is not barbed like that of the honeybee, so they can sting more than once.
