Biology and Behavior
Honey Bees are important because they pollinate approximately 130 agricultural crops in the United States including fruit, nut, and vegetable crops. It is estimated that Honey Bee pollination adds approximately 14 billion dollars annually to improved crop yield and quality. Although Honey bees are beneficial to our agricultural, they also can be a serious pest. Honey Bees can become a serious problem, they may find an opening to nest in an opening in an exterior wall, faulty flashing of a home or chimney. After finding the opening , they nest in a wall void or some other interior area. The nest can survive throughout the winter if well protected.
The nests are made of wax cells that may contain many pounds of reserved honey.
If the bees are alive, they have a built in "air conditioner", by fanning their wings to keep the wax from melting. If they are killed however, this wax will begin to melt in the warmer months, causing the reserved honey to seep out. This may cause unsightly damage and it may attract other insects. There is only one queen in a hive and her main purpose in life is to make more bees. She can lay over 1,500 eggs per day and will live two to eight years. Her stinger is curved with no barbs on it and she can use it many times. Drones, since they are males, have no stinger. They live about eight weeks. Only a few hundred at most are ever present in the hive. Their sole function is to mate with a new queen. Worker bees do all the different tasks needed to maintain and operate the hive. They make up the vast majority of the hive's occupants and they are all sterile females. They have a straight, barbed stinger which can only be used once. It rips out of their abdomen after use, which kills the bee. If stung make sure to remove the stinger. Scrape it out side wise so that you don't pinch the venom sack and make it squirt more venom.
